James (JC) C. Ryan 1926-12/10/2016. JC started training in the late 1940’s in Lynchburg. He started competing about 1950. JC was State Champion at least three times 1953 165lb class, 1958 181lb class and 1965 181lb class. Second State Championships 181lb class 1967, third State Championships 181lb class 1962.Third All South Championships 181lb class 1957. Second Capital District Weightlifting Championships 181lb class 1958. Third Capitol District Weightlifting Championships 181lb class 1961. First Hampton Roads Weightlifting championships 181lb class 1961. Third Chesapeake Bay Invitational 181lb class 1963. Second Old Dominion Weightlifting Championships 181lb class 1963. First Colonial Olympic Meet 181lb class 1964. First Chesapeake Bay Invitational 181lb class 1964. JC usually trained at his home gym. Many other lifters in the Richmond area would train at JC’s gym. JC also coached local lifters including Dave Traylor. Like many lifters of the era JC would assist at contest as a judge, loader or where ever he was needed.
